Will new conservatories be banned?

There has been a lot of talk in the news about whether conservatories are going to be banned and what that means for those who already have them.

There has been a lot of talk in the news about whether conservatories are going to be banned and what that means for those who already have them. We’re here with a no-nonsense guide so that you know exactly where you stand and whether or not you need to do anything about yours. The long and short of it is that new conservatories on new-build houses are now not permitted, unless it can be proven that they do not create what is described as ‘unwanted solar gain’. Note that this rule applies to new-build homes only, built from June 2022 onwards.

Why have they been banned?

This new legislation is designed to combat the climate crisis, with other rules and regulations in place to keep new homes cooler as temperatures continue to rise here in the UK.

What if I already have a conservatory?

If you already have a conservatory and it is built above board, then you have nothing to worry about in terms of being permitted to keep your conservatory. Also, if you’re planning on building a conservatory to a home that is already built, so long as it wasn’t built after June 2022, then you are still allowed to build or add a conservatory onto your home, should permissions allow.

What can I do to reduce the impact of my conservatory?

If you’re reading this and you’re worried about the impact that your conservatory is having on the climate, there are some things you can do to reduce the impact. The first would be to invest in conservatory roof insulation. This is a way of regulating the temperature of your conservatory and preventing temperatures from soaring. It also means you spend less energy and money on regulating the temperature, meaning it is a better choice for the environment. Conservatory ceiling insulation is a relatively low-cost investment versus the long-term savings, and conservatory insulations are proving more popular than ever for homeowners with a conservatory. Another option is to consider and monitor your energy usage in this space and to see how you can cut it down. It can be easier said than done so you might need to spend a little time and money in order to cut this down. Lastly, looking at how you use the space is a good way to review your conservatory, and see how you can make the most out of it, without it being a space that creates a big impact on our environment without it even being used or enjoyed. If you want to speak to an expert about your conservatory and the impact it is having on the environment, a member of the team will be happy to help. We offer conservatory roof insulation in the North of the UK, and our team of technicians are well-equipped to help make your conservatory more energy-efficient.
